What sets On apart
On was founded in Zurich in 2010. The idea began with one of its founders experimenting with a garden hose: hollow tubes that cushion the landing, then close up to give a firm base for pushing off. That design, called CloudTec, is still the signature of the brand.
Most current models pair CloudTec with Helion foam. Some also add a Speedboard, a plate inside the midsole that stiffens the shoe lengthwise and against twisting. Newer models like the Cloudsurfer use CloudTec Phase, where the holes run diagonally through the length of the sole instead of forming separate pods.[1][3][4]
Which On for which stride
For neutral, easy running, the Cloudsurfer is the softer choice, with a flexible forefoot and pronounced toe spring. The Cloudmonster carries more cushioning, but feels slightly firmer and steadier thanks to its Speedboard, and can move into uptempo running. Drops differ too: the Cloudmonster 2 lists 6 mm, while the Cloudrunner 2 lists 10 mm, which reviewers felt closer to 6 to 8 mm once the pods compress.
If your foot needs guidance, the Cloudrunner is On’s mild stability shoe. On the Cloudrunner 2, larger pods on the inside of the heel and rearfoot sidewalls keep the foot centred, and reviewers note a roomier fit that also suits walking.
For racing, the Cloudboom Strike combines a carbon Speedboard with Helion HF, On’s softest foam. Reviewers found it best for neutral midfoot strikers who load the forefoot at push-off.[3][4][5][6]
Where On is not the obvious choice
Reviewers often find On shoes firmer than their stack suggests, so runners who want a deep, soft cushion may prefer other brands. The Cloudsurfer’s flexible forefoot with strong toe spring can also bother runners with limited big-toe mobility. The Cloudrunner’s roomier fit is the better starting point for wider feet.
A fitting shows how you land and push off, and whether a pod-based sole suits that stride.[3][4][5]

Questions runners ask.
What is CloudTec?
CloudTec is On’s sole design: hollow pods, or clouds, that compress as the foot lands and then lock together to form a firm base for push-off. The idea started with a garden hose prototype. Newer models use CloudTec Phase, with diagonal holes running the length of the sole.[1][4]
What is the difference between the On Cloudmonster and the Cloudsurfer?
The Cloudmonster has more cushioning, Helion foam and a Speedboard plate, which makes it slightly firmer, steadier and able to handle faster runs. The Cloudsurfer is a softer neutral trainer on CloudTec Phase with a flexible, rockered forefoot. Runners who want stability under a big stack lean Cloudmonster.[3][4]
Does On make stability running shoes?
Yes. The Cloudrunner is On’s mild stability running shoe. The Cloudrunner 2 uses a heel clip, rearfoot sidewalls and larger pods on the inside of the foot to keep the landing centred, and reviewers describe a roomier fit suited to easy runs, walking and standing.[5]
What is the Speedboard in On shoes?
The Speedboard is a plate inside the midsole of many On shoes. In everyday models like the Cloudmonster it adds stiffness lengthwise and against twisting. In the Cloudboom Strike race shoe, the Speedboard is carbon-based.[3][6]
Are On running shoes soft?
On shoes generally feel firmer than their stack height suggests. Reviewers describe the Cloudmonster 2 as slightly firm but highly cushioned and the Cloudrunner 2 as balanced between firm and soft. Reviewers describe Helion HF, in the Cloudboom Strike, as On’s softest foam.[3][5][6]
