Tempo shoes.

For the runs with a watch on: intervals, tempo, progression runs. Lighter and livelier than a daily trainer, kinder than a race shoe.

Foam and drop, mapped.

Some tempo shoes feel firm and quick, others soft and bouncy. Right means firmer, up means more heel.

Before you choose.

A second pair, for the days you push.

Do I need a tempo shoe?

Only if you run fast sessions every week. It saves your daily trainer and makes quick running feel easier, but one good daily pair is enough for most plans.

Should a tempo shoe have a plate?

Not necessarily. Many have a stiffened midsole or a flexible plate. Firmer and stiffer feels snappier at pace, but asks more of your calves.

Can I race in a tempo shoe?

Yes. For 5K and 10K races, or a first marathon, a tempo shoe is often the better choice than a full race shoe: more stable, more forgiving, longer lasting.
